SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The West Coast Conference announced their 2019 All-Academic Team on Tuesday and three Gaels made the cut for their hard work in the classroom: Valentin Sponer, Anders Engebretsen, and Filippo Zattarin.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average while also being a significant contributor to her team.
Sponer, a junior, recorded a 3.93 GPA while studying physics. The senior Engebretsen owns a 3.76 GPA while pursuing a degree in economics while Zattarin, another junior, posted a 3.73 GPA while also studying economics.
Saint Mary's had the most honorees of any program on the team and Sponer had the third-highest GPA of the 10 members. The honor for Engebretsen was his second straight year on the All-Academic Team. Saint Mary's also had five honorable mentions considered for the team: Jeremiah Michael, James Person, Joseph Restani, Sebastian Schacht, and Philippe Van der Lof.
Just yesterday, the Gaels also had five players named to the first or second West Region All-Academic Teams by United Soccer Coaches. Engebretsen received a First Team nod while Michael, Sponer, Zattarin, and Restani each made the Second Team.
This season, nine student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.75 or better, including three with perfect 4.00 GPA's in juniors Ethan Bandre (Pacific) and Sandro Bradara (San Francisco) alongside sophomore Cameron Martin (San Francisco). In total, 26 honorees turned in GPA's above a 3.50.
