PROVO, Utah–– A relentless BYU offense and silent SMC bats told the story on Friday night as the Gaels fell to 0-2 in the series against the Cougars.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SMC struggled defensively in the first inning, committing three errors. The Cougars pushed five runs across in total, collecting two hits in the process.
- There were multiple delays in the second inning, beginning with heavy snow falling that forced both sides into the dugout for nine minutes. Then, after six minutes of play, lightning forced the second delay of the game – this time for 15 minutes.
- BYU scored their sixth run in the bottom of the second, coming off of a single and an RBI double.
- The Cougars' relentless offense continued in the bottom of the third as they scored seventh run of the game thanks to a pair of hits. As a result, BYU exited the third with a 7-0 lead.
- Senior Austin Chauvin led the fifth off with a double to left field. He moved over to third in the next at-bat as sophomore Jack Murphy grounded out. Sophomore JC Santini walked on five pitches to put runners at the corners with one out, but the next two batters flew out and grounded out respectively and SMC was unable to score.
- The Cougars' Brock Hale hit his third homerun of the series in the seventh inning, a 3-run shot to give BYU an 11-0 lead.
