MORAGA, Calif. –– The Gaels struck early on Friday and came alive again in the final inning, but eventually dropped the series finale against BYU 5-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gaels got started early on Saturday as Ryan Novis reached base immediately after an error on the throw to first. Kevin Milam then drove a double to deep center field that scored Novis and put Saint Mary's up 1-0.
- With two outs in the bottom of the second, Mitch McIntyre of BYU hit a solo homerun over the right field wall to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Cougars put runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the third following a walk and a single. A sacrifice fly to right field scored the runner on third and put BYU ahead 2-1.
- BYU scored their third run of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning after a double followed by a single drove in the runner on second base and put the Cougars up by two runs. After walking the next batter, BYU hit a single up the middle and the Cougars went up 4-1. One more run came across the plate in the bottom of the seventh and BYU had the 5-1 advantage over the Gaels.
- In the top of the ninth inning, Jack Murphy hit a deep single to right center to leadoff the inning. Austin Chauvin then came to the plate and hit his second homerun of the season to left field and brought the Gaels within two runs of BYU. The Gaels however couldn't keep the rally going and fell 5-3 to the Cougars.

COMING UP
The Gaels will return to Louis Guisto Field this upcoming weekend for a three-game set against WCC opponent Portland. First pitch of game one will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday.
