SB | Saint Mary's Falls to Cal in Five Innings
4/10/2019 7:11:00 PM | Softball
The Golden Bears erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take Wednesday's contest, 8-0.
BERKELEY, Calif. — Saint Mary's (7-27) squared off with Cal (22-18) for the second time this season in a midweek road game but encountered a similar result to the previous matchup in an 8-0 loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels led off the game with back-to-back singles from Dylan Linton and Kimiko Zapanta but Bears' pitcher Kamalani Dung would go on to the retire the next 14 hitters in a row to subdue the SMC offense.
With two outs in the fifth, Abbey Mariani reached on an error and Jayda Alaan drew a hit by pitch to put two runners on base but Dung struck out her seventh batter of the afternoon to avoid trouble.
The Gaels held the game tied until the third when Makena Smith hit a 3-run shot that put Cal up. The Golden Bears rallied in the fifth inning with five more runs and walked off on a bases-loaded single from Lauren Espalin.
Eryn McCoy started in the circle for Saint Mary's and pitched 4.1 innings in the loss.
UP NEXT: SANTA CLARA
The Gaels return to Cottrell Field for a three-game series with the Broncos beginning Saturday. The Saturday doubleheader will be Alumni Day and former Gael softball student-athletes are encouraged to come out to the game to be recognized.
