SB | Gaels Drop Two To Sacramento State

Saint Mary's was swept during Tuesday's doubleheader against the Hornets.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (9-30, 2-1 WCC) had an opportunity to split Tuesday's doubleheader with Sacramento State but a late rally by the Hornets (24-18, 5-3 Big Sky) would lead to a sweep over the Gaels.

Game 1
Sac State 6, Saint Mary's 1

The Gaels mustered up just three hits in the opening game as the Hornets' ace Savanna Corr kept SMC off balance in the box. Kimiko Zapanta had a single in the fifth and immediately swiped two bags and came home on a throwing error by the CSUS catcher to score the team's lone run.

Dylan Linton and Bailey Lotz had the other two hits for the Gaels. Abbey Mariani reached base twice with two walks as did Jayda Alaan who walked and was hit by a pitch.

Sofia Earle threw a complete game and struck out 10 but picked up the loss to move to 3-9. Corr struck out four and walked four to improve to 16-9.

Game 2
Sac State 5, Saint Mary's 4 (9)

After the Hornets scored a single run in the third, Saint Mary's rallied with three in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Sac State committed two errors in the inning to aid the Gaels' effort and Mariani and Lotz each delivered RBI singles in the frame.

SMC held the score until the seventh when the Hornets' Krystal Aubert collected a pinch hit RBI single to cut the deficit to one. With two outs in the inning, Sydney Rasmussen capped off a 9-pitch at bat with a double to left center to bring home the tying run from first.

In the bottom of the frame, Jaymee Campbell stroked a triple to right field with only one out to set the Gaels up for a potential walk-off but the next two batters were retired to force extra innings.

Following a scoreless eighth, Sac State's 3-hole hitter Suzy Brookshire smacked a two-run homer to left field to put the Hornets up once again, 5-3. Saint Mary's continued to battle however and crossed a run and placed a runner on third with two outs. Zapanta was the next hitter for the Gaels and hit a rocket to left on the first pitch of the at bat but right at the Hornets' left fielder to end the game.

Alaan and Lotz each went 2-for-4 in the game as part of an eight hit effort for the Gaels.
