GOLF | Ashbrook Leads Gaels to Third at WCC Championship

Ethan Ashbrook had the team's best round of the tournament on Saturday to help Saint Mary's clinch third.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Saint Mary's bounced back from a tough second round to finish the WCC Championship with a 4-under day to claim third place in the conference tournament. With the bronze, the Gaels have now finished third or better at the last five WCC Championships.

THE LEADERBOARD
Saturday was a tale of two Ethans as Ethan Ashbrook and Ethan Farnam both shot under par final rounds. Ashbrook had the team's best round of the tournament at 4-under while Farnam had a steady 1-under showing. Both Gaels finished tied for eighth in the field with combined scores of 2-under.

Saint Mary's finished the tournament at 4-under after shooting 5-under on Thursday and 5-over on Friday.

Ryan Grauman had the third best score of the team to finish 1-under at the tournament. Blake Hathcoat and Michael Slesinski rounded out the Gaels' lineup at 5-over. Hathcoat was 1-over during the final 18 holes.

No. 18 Pepperdine claimed their 20th WCC Title with a final score of 13-under. The Waves shot 4-under on Saturday and were led by RJ Manke, who won the medalist title at 6-under over the three rounds. San Francisco finished second at 10-under and Saint Mary's ended up one stroke ahead of No. 30 BYU.

Loyola Marymount's Riley Elmes was also 6-under in the tournament but lost to Manke in a sudden death playoff. USF's Christoffer Palsson and Tim Widing and Gonzaga's Chris Mogg made up the rest of the top-5.

FINAL ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ashbrook, Grauman, and Slesinski all had five birdies in the round.
  • Slesinski had three straight birdies from 14th to 16th.
  • Four Gaels birdied the 540-yard par 5 sixth hole.
  • Farnam, Ashbrook, and Grauman didn't bogey a single hole on the front nine.
  • Grauman had back-to-back birdies between 6th and 7th as well as 16th and 17th.

UP NEXT

  • Saint Mary's will now await to see if their team will be selected for NCAA Regionals which will be announced live on the Golf Channel at 6 p.m. PT on May 1. Should their name be called, the Gaels would travel to one of six host locations ranging from Stanford, Calif. to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
