MORAGA, Calif. – Former Saint Mary's pitcher and outfielder, Tony Gonsolin, is set to make his Major League Debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, June 26. He is tabbed for the start against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
The Vacaville, Calif. native was a four-year star for Saint Mary's between 2013 and 2016 before being selected by the Dodgers in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. As a pitcher for the Gaels, he led SMC in saves in both 2015 (seven) and 2016 (six) and posted a 3.86 earned run average in his senior season. That year, he tossed 42.0 innings, making five starts, and collected 39 strikeouts, 18 earned runs, 16 walks, and earned a spot on the All-West Coast Conference First Team. He also started all 57 games in the field in Saint Mary's WCC Championship run, amassing 65 hits, seven homeruns, and 26 runs batted in 212 at-bats. Gonsolin had a big sophomore campaign at the plate in 2014, leading the team in multiple categories including: batting average (.308), hits (64), and runs (37). He also led the team in triples his sophomore through senior seasons including eight in 2014 which is still the most by any Gael since 1978. His 17 career triples are tied for the most in the SMC modern era.
Tony has risen through the minor leagues quickly, primarily as a pitcher. In 2018 he tossed 128.0 innings, registering a 2.60 earned run average. He struck out 155 batters (10.9 punchouts per nine) in his time between High A and Double-A while walking just 42. He has continued to excel in his promotion to Triple-A this season: in his eight starts, he has a 2.77 ERA in 26.0 IP. He has totaled 31 strikeouts during that time while allowing just eight earned runs and 20 hits.
Gonsolin's first Major League start is set for 12:40 p.m. at Chase Field. It can be watched on Sportsnet LA and it is featured on MLB.TV as the "free game of the day."
