Four Gaels are already under consideration for the top player in the country prior to the 2019 season.
MORAGA, Calif. — Coming off their near perfect 18-0-2 season, Saint Mary's is back on the national radar with four seniors named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. All-Americans Jake Rudel and Remi Prieur were named early candidates for the award as well as forward Anders Engebretsen and midfielder Jakub Svehlik.
The 10-pound crystal soccer ball trophy is awarded to the top men's and women's Div. I soccer player each year as voted by Div. I head coaches. Last season, Indiana's Andrew Gutman and Stanford's Catarina Macario received the prestigious honor.
"Jake, Remi, Anders, and Jakub have really developed into fantastic players," said Gaels' head coach Adam Cooper. "They were very good last season and were a big part of our success. We're excited to see them take their game to an even higher level this year."
There were a total of 36 players named to this year's men's watch list with Saint Mary's leading all schools with four representatives. Kentucky and New Hampshire were the only schools to have three members also on the list.
Rudel paced the top offense in the nation by leading the West Coast Conference in goals and points with 13 and 31, respectively. He finished second in program history in both categories for single season totals and notched his second career hat trick against Cal Poly on Sept. 9.
Engebretsen quietly produced 24 points alongside Rudel and led the conference in assists and shots taken. The Norweigen scored his biggest goal of the season during the NCAA Tournament against Oregon State to help Saint Mary's advance 1-0 and play Stanford in the third round.
Prieur returns to goal for Saint Mary's following a magnificent campaign where he ranked at the top of the nation in multiple statistical categories including save percentage and shutouts. His 14.0 shutouts and 18 wins in goal for the Gaels each marked program records. Prieur was named WCC Goalkeeper of the Year in addition to All-American, All-Region, and First Team All-WCC honors.
Svehlik missed five games last year due to injury but still managed to tie for 10th in the WCC in total points with four goals and four assists. Three of his four goals were game winners including an overtime winner against UC Santa Barbara and a 90th minute game-winning goal on the road at New Mexico.
Saint Mary's begins exhibition play on Aug. 20 with a 7 p.m. contest at Stanford. The regular season begins just over a week later on Aug. 30 with a home match against UC Irvine. For tickets, fans can visit the Gaels' ticket site above, call (925) 631-GoTx, or purchase in-person at the stadium entrance.
