Khayla Jones will take on the role of volunteer assistant during the 2019 season for Saint Mary's.
MORAGA, Calif. — Women's soccer head coach Travis Clarke has welcomed Saint Mary's alumnae Khalya Jones as his new volunteer assistant for the 2019 season. Jones returns to SMC after playing as goalie for the Gaels from 2012-15.
"We are excited to have Khayla back on campus," said Clarke. "She is a very positive person and someone who can help our program in a lot of different ways. Khayla is someone who is driven to be a college soccer coach and we are excited to have her with us as she starts this process."
Jones graduated from Saint Mary's in 2015 after being a key component in the box for Saint Mary's. Although she missed much playing time due to injury, Jones was named to the National Team of the Week by Top Drawer Soccer during her freshman year and earned a spot on the Saint Mary's Tournament All-Tourney Team in the same season. Jones made 13 starts in 2012 and was responsible for five of SMC's six wins.
Jones will be working directly with new assistant coach Anne Whipple on various projects related to alumnae engagement as well as with associate head coach Jon Lipsitz on video and goalie training with the team's three goalies. In addition, Jones will also be responsible for camps, travel, and equipment.
Saint Mary's begin exhibition play on Thursday at San Jose State. The team officially opens their season on the road in North Dakota on Aug. 23. More details and game times can be found on the team's schedule page.
