Saint Mary's will play in six tournaments to close out the 2019 calendar year.
MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's men's golf will play in six tournaments during the fall spanning from the middle of September to early November and within those events, play at some of the most prestigious college courses in the country against premier competition.
GOLD MOUNTAIN
The Gaels kick off their season at the Husky Invitational which is hosted by Washington and held at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. The two-day event begins with the opening 36-holes on Sep. 16 followed by the final round on the 17th.
Gold Mountain consists of two 18-hole courses, Olympic and Cascade, that feature tree-lined fairways and subtle rolling hills. In addition to the annual Husky Invitational, the Olympic course has served as host for several important tournaments including the 2006 US Amateur Public Links Championship, 2011 US Junior Amateur Championship, and the NCAA Regionals in both 2008 and 2015.
Saint Mary's a bit of history with the course as the team advanced past the 2008 NCAA Regionals held at Gold Mountain to make their first ever NCAA Championship. In 2013, the Gaels clinched the WCC Championship at the course for the school's second all-time conference title.
The course is marked for a par 72 and the all-time low score is a 65.
INVERNESS
A week after the Husky Invitational, Saint Mary's will play in the Inverness Intercollegiate held at the historic Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The Gaels have been regulars at the tournament over the past few years and won the event two years ago.
Since being founded in 1903, the Inverness Club has held multiple major tournaments including four US Opens with the most recent occurrence coming in 1979. The course has played host to the PGA Championship twice, US Amateur and 2019 US Junior Amateur, US Senior Open twice, and men's NCAA Championship twice, most recently in 2009.
The tournament is held by the University of Toledo and featured 12 teams last season.
MEADOW CLUB
In October, the Gaels return to another familiar event at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational held by Cal at Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif. The picturesque course is nestled within the hills of Marin County and is just an hour and change drive from Moraga. SMC has played in the tournament for several years in a row and finished tied for third in 2016.
In addition to the Alister Mackenzie, Meadow Club also hosts the Marin County Amateur & Senior Four-Ball Championship as well as the Meadow Club Women's Intercollegiate in the spring.
POPPY HILLS
The Gaels will host the 13th annual Saint Mary's Invitational from Nov. 4-6 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in their final tournament of the calendar year. SMC finished second as recently as 2016 in the always-competitive field. Last year's event featured 17 other teams with five being ranked among Golfstat's top-50.
The course rests along Pebble Beach's 17-Mile Drive which features eight total courses, seven being championship, and is arguably the best zip code for golf in the nation. The famed Pebble Beach Golf Links headlines the group along with Spyglass Hill, Cypress Point (designed by the legendary Alister Mackenzie who also designed Augusta National), and The Links at Spanish Bay among others.
Poppy Hills became the first course to be owned and operated by a golf association in the United States when it opened June 1, 1986. The Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, since redesigned in 2014, has co-hosted the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991 through 2009, as well as the Spalding Pebble Beach Invitational (1989, 1990, 1992, 1993) and 1991 NCAA Men's Championships. BYU's Peter Kuest set the course record at last year's Invitational with a 61.
