WSOC | Gaels Outlast Lancers in 2-1 Victory

Saint Mary's picked up their second win of the season on Friday after the Gaels put up two goals for the win.

MORAGA, Calif. Saint Mary's started the weekend off on a high note following a strong offensive outing in the 2-1 victory over California Baptist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's defense had a strong performance during the first half as they did not give up a goal while allowing only six shots. In the final minutes of the half, Jaylen Crim broke the scoreless tie when she rocketed the ball into the right corner of the net after assists from Jordyn Cunningham and Kamryn Farro in the 40th minute.

Kaytlin Brinkman kept the momentum rolling in the second half for SMC as Brinkman scored the second goal of the match. The forward flew through the California Baptist defenders after Cunningham headed her the ball to send it past the goalie into the center of the net in the 65th minute.

California Baptist managed to put up a goal in the 76th minute of the contest after Miranda Hald's shot barely slipped by goalie Maleah Milner to score. During the matchup, the Gaels shut down seven corner kicks attempts by the Lancers.

Milner made eight saves for the Gaels en route to her second victory of the season. Milner made multiple impressive saves during the contest, including a diving save in the 60th minute which was immediately followed by another save to prevent the Lancers from scoring. The junior has started in all five matches for Saint Mary's this year and has 15 saves thus far.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
  • "We worked hard on our effort all week. We even changed our lineup a bit and the ones who were new to the lineup did great and the ones who subbed into the game really put out good effort."
  • "It was good to score a couple of goals. California Baptist is well coached and they work hard. It was a quality win for us."
