MORAGA, Calif. — Details have been announced for the annual First Pitch Dinner and Alumni Game for Saint Mary's College Baseball, the traditional kick-off to the baseball season. The season begins with the 2020 First Pitch Dinner on Friday, February 7 and continues with the 2020 Alumni Game on Saturday, February 8.
The First Pitch Dinner features cocktails, dinner, a post-event reception, and both silent and live auctions. It begins on February 7 at 5:00 pm in the newly built Baseball Development Center, and will move over to the Soda Center for dinner and the program. Following the event, there will be a post-event reception in the 1928 Pub on campus at approximately 8:30 pm. Tickets are $175 per person and $150 per Gael Baseball Alum. The deadline to register for the dinner is January 31.
The Alumni Game is the first contest of the season, with the current Gaels squaring off against a host of alumni from years past. First-pitch for the game is set for February 8 at 12:00 pm on Louis Guisto Field and precedes the basketball doubleheader on campus against Gonzaga. To RSVP a spot in the Gaels Alumni Game, please email, call, or text Associate Head Coach Jordon Twohig at jrt8@stmarys-ca.edu or 206-295-2710.
The beginning of the baseball season is sure to bring excitement around a program that has seen wide success in recent seasons. Last year, the Gaels went 35-22 and went a spectacular 22-3 at Louis Guisto Field. Saint Mary's made a run in the 2019 WCC Tournament, going all the way to the championship game before falling to LMU in heartbreak fashion 4-2, in ten innings.
The Gaels hit .281 as a team and featured four starters with averages over .300, led by Ryan Novis at .328. Joe Vranesh led the team with 15 home runs, part of 41 long balls the Gaels smacked in 2019. On the pitching side, both Tyler Thornton and Carlos Lomeli went 10-2 atop the rotation, with Michael Hobbs holding down the bullpen with seven saves.
