SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The great start to the season continues for Finau Tonga, as the Gaels redshirt-freshman was named WCC Freshman of the Week, presented by University Credit Union, for the second time in four weeks.
As Saint Mary's picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday, the driving force was none other than Tonga. The redshirt-freshman was on fire during the win over UC Irvine, going 9-12 from the field en route to a career-best 23 points. Not only did she prove to be a force in the paint offensively, she also grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double, with seven of her rebounds on the offensive glass. Tonga, the WCC Freshman of the Week in week one, is averaging 11.4 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game.
This marks the second time a repeat winner has been named in the four short weeks of the season, with San Francisco's Ioanna Krimili having taken home the honors during weeks two and three of the campaign. Tonga shares weekly honors with Valerie Higgins of Pacific, who was named the WCC Player of the Week.
Saint Mary's hosts Nevada at 1:00 pm on Monday afternoon for their home opener, before entering WCC play following the Christmas holiday.
