MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's imposed their will Sunday evening as they held San Francisco State to just 38 points, their lowest opponent scoring total since holding LMU to 38 points in 2019. The Gaels improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2015 when Saint Mary's started 5-0. Ella Wedin led the Gaels in scoring with a career high 14 points, finishing 5-for-7 from the field including a career high four three-pointers.
Mauriana Hashemian-Orr came off the bench again and was solid with ten points, seven rebounds and a team high five assists. Nine players for the Gaels finished with at least five points in the game as they cruised to the 39-point home win.
FIRST HALF SMC 34-20 SF STATE
Saint Mary's fired off 19 shots in the first quarter but shot just 36% from the field, finishing the opening quarter with 15 points. SF State hung around thanks to the three ball with three triples in the first quarter, putting them down just four at the break.
The Gaels bench scoring came alive in the second quarter, finishing with 17 points to spark a 19-point quarter. On the flip side, they held the Gators to just three made field goals on 21% shooting. The Gaels went on a 9-0 scoring run under the eight-minute mark that was capped off by a transition layup from Emily Foy.
Two possessions later, Ella Wedin splashed home a corner three to give Saint Mary's an 11-point lead. Wedin finished the half on a hot streak as she hit her second three of the half with the clock winding down, pushing their lead to a game high 14 points going into the break. The Gaels were much more efficient in the quarter, shooting 40% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc.
FINAL SMC 77-38 SF STATE
Everything was working for Saint Mary's to start the second half as they opened up on an 11-0 run to take a 25-point lead nearly halfway into the quarter. Addi Wedin hit a corner three for her third of the game while Mauriana Hashemian-Orr scored four points during that stretch to grow the Gaels lead.
The Gaels were aggressive in transition and became even more dangerous when the perimeter shots started to fall. They finished the game with nine three's on 39% shooting. They were also dominating the glass with their size and athleticism, outscoring the Gators 18-0 on second chance points and finished +27 on the glass.
Ella Wedin struck at the buzzer again to end the third quarter with a transition three as time expired to put the Gaels up 30 with a quarter to play. That three pointer would go down as a new career high, giving her four made three's for the game. Wedin went on to finish with a career high 14 points after hitting a jumper later in the fourth.
Saint Mary's held San Francisco State to just 38 points on the night and 25% shooting. The Gators hit eight three's but struggled to deal with the Gaels size and pace in transition as they got outscored 20-4 in fast break points. Ella Wedin led all scorers with 14 points while Hashemian-Orr finished with ten points and a team high five assists. Edie Clarke made her defensive presence felt in the Gaels 1-3-1 zone as she recorded a game high five steals along with her eight points and six boards. True freshman Coco Urlacher was able to come off the bench and get her first collegiate minutes while transfer Charlece Ohiaeri finished with a season high eight points in her 13 minutes off the bench, adding to another productive night for the Gaels reserves.
