WBB | Giddy Up! Gaels Down Cowgirls in Defensive Battle for Season Opening Win
11/4/2025 9:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LARAMIE, Wyo. - 7,720 feet above sea level, the Saint Mary's women's basketball team went into Laramie and took down Wyoming 56-47 for the season opening victory. It was a defensive battle all night long but the Gaels got aggressive in the fourth to put up 21 points while holding the Cowgirls to just 12 points over the final ten minutes.
The scoring was spread out for Saint Mary's but their two double-digit scorers came off the bench in Mauriana Hasemian-Orr and Addi Wedin. Orr ran the offense the majority of the second half and was stellar, finishing with 12 points, four boards and a pair of steals. Wedin gave the Gaels a much needed spark from beyond the arc, knocking down two three's including one in the fourth that put them up seven with two minutes to play.
Abigail Shoff finished with eight points while Jada Hunter also shined off the bench with nine points, five rebounds and two steals.
FIRST HALF SMC 23-26 WYO
Scoring came at a premium for both teams in the season opener but great defensive intensity kept the Gaels in the game. Wyoming led for most of the first half including their largest lead of eleven points at the 6:08 mark in the second quarter. With 47 seconds left in the first quarter, first-year Gael Malia Latu would convert a tough layup inside to make it a four-point game. Wyoming's Malene Pedersen though would respond with a three pointer on the ensuing possession to give the Cowgirls a 19-12 lead after the first.
Saint Mary's clamped down even more defensively in the second quarter, holding Wyoming to just seven points on 27% shooting. The Gaels also forced five turnovers in the quarter including one on the final possession that led to a Jada Hunter layup in transition as the first half buzzer sounded. The Gaels were back and forth between a man and a zone defense but Mauriana Hashemian-Orr shot the gap on a bounce pass and led the fast break for the Hunter layup. Addi Wedin hit a three pointer on the prior possession to help the Gaels close the half on a 7-0 run and make it a two-point game at the break.
FINAL SMC 56-47 WYO
Once again, Saint Mary's held Wyoming to single-digits, nine points on 14% shooting in the third quarter. The Cowgirls converted just one field goal but were 6-for-6 from the free throw line to stay in the game. Head coach Jeff Cammon has had a clear defensive identity over his coaching career and seemed to hit another gear tonight with united pressure all night long.
With just over four minutes remaining in the quarter, Abigail Shoff got down hill and nailed a pull-up jumper, plus the foul, to ignite the Gaels bench and give them a one-point lead. The quarter would end knotted at 35 after split free throws from Wedin with just over a minute remaining.
The offense finally broke out for Saint Mary's in the fourth quarter as the Gaels shot 60% from the field and were also a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line to help ice the game late. Both teams were trading buckets early in the period, but the turning point came with 2:25 on the clock as Addi Wedin would drill a three pointer as the shot clock expired to give the Gaels a seven-point lead.
Six consecutive made free throws from Hunter, Orr and Wedin would help ice the game over the final two minutes as Saint Mary's would take down the Cowgirls 56-47. It wasn't the prettiest game offensively for either side but the Gaels flexed their defensive tenacity, forcing 20 turnovers and holding Wyoming to 34% shooting on the night. They allowed just 28 points over the final three quarters, allowing their offense to come alive in the fourth with some big shots from the likes of Addi Wedin, Abigail Shoff and Edie Clarke. Bench scoring was also an influential statistic as the Gaels outscored the Cowgirls 38-16 and finished the game with three bench players on the floor, Hashemian-Orr, Hunter and Wedin.
