MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's hits the road for their final road trip of the season this week as they face off against BYU and San Diego.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels split their two contests last week as they fell to Portland on Thursday before taking down No. 11 Gonzaga in thrilling fashion on Saturday. In the loss to the Pilots, there were a number of highlights including four Gaels reaching double-digits in the points: Sam Simons (17), Madeline Holland (10), Claire Ferguson (10), and a career-high 10 points from Mia Grizelj. SMC then went on to take down the Bulldogs as they spent the entire contest leading their opponent while holding them to just 33 percent from the field. 14 made threes from the Gaels is just four shy of their season-high as a team which they recorded on December 7 against Cal Poly. Saint Mary's recorded their largest lead of the game in the final period where they went on a 11-0 run as they were leading by 21 points.
GIANT KILLERS
Saturday's win wasn't just a big win for this season, but a big win for the program as a whole. Saint Mary's defeat of No. 11 Gonzaga is the best win in head coach Paul Thomas' 14-year tenure. The victory for the Gaels is their first win against a ranked opponent since the 2015-16 season when they beat No. 18 Cal on December 5, 2015. The last time SMC took a win against the Bulldogs was on February 10, 2018 when the Gaels won 72-56 on the road. Saint Mary's has not had a win at home against Gonzaga since February 18, 2016. The win for Saint Mary's was Gonzaga's first defeat in West Coast Conference action this season and their first loss since November 17 when they fell 76-70 to Stanford in overtime.
STELLAR SIMONS
On the heels of a big week for Saint Mary's Women's Basketball, Sam Simons has been awarded the Saint Mary's Student-Athlete of the Week award, for her performance during two games inside University Credit Union Pavilion this weekend.Simons was on her mark all week long as the Gaels split their weekend of conference games. Notably, on Saturday, the Gaels ended No. 11 Gonzaga's 22-game winning streak, the longest in the country, with a 70-60 win. Simons was instrumental in that win, going 5-5 from three-point range (part of 14-21 as a team from beyond the arc), en route to 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. For the week, Simons scored 39 points (19.5 PPG), on 15-25 shooting (60%), 6-7 from three-point range, 5 RPG, 3 APG, and 2 overall steals.
BYU
The Cougars are 13-9 this season with a conference record of 8-4 after opening the season with two back-to-back wins. BYU most recently dropped two contests in a row to Gonzaga and San Diego which broke a six-game winning streak through the month of January. Last time out, BYU lost by just six points to USD, the team they are currently tied for second place with in the conference standings. The team has been on the road for their last three games and will be returning to the Marriott Center, where they have a record of 6-3 this year, for matchups against SMC and Pacific. Last time Saint Mary's and BYU met on January 2, it was the Cougars who secured the 65-55 victory over the Gaels at UCU Pavilion.
SAN DIEGO
The Toreros have a record of 14-9 this season as well as an 8-4 conference record. San Diego has picked up their last two wins in a row after winning on the road against Portland and then defeating BYU at home. The victory against the Cougars was the beginning of a three-game homestand for the Toreros as they will face Pacific on Thursday before facing off against SMC. USD is currently tied for second place in the conference with BYU as both teams are 8-4 against WCC opponents. San Diego has a home record of 8-5 this season, as they have won their last three consecutive games at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
