SAN BRUNO, Calif. — In advance of the 2020 University Credit Union West Coast Conference Tournament, the WCC has announced its 2020 All-WCC team. Saint Mary's Women's Basketball is represented with a pair of players on the team in Sam Simons and Taycee Wedin.
SAM SIMONS – FIRST-TEAM ALL-WCC
After being listed on the preseason All-WCC team, Sam Simons follows through and ends her sophomore season with All-WCC honors for the first time, after landing on the honorable mention list last year. Simons has been leading the charge for a potent Gaels offense all season long, finishing the year third in the conference with 16.0 points per game. A well-rounded player as well, Simons grabbed 5.5 rebounds per game to rank in the top-20 in the conference, and made 58 three-pointers, second most on the Gaels. Twice this season, Simons put up a double-double, and tied a career-high in rebounds on both occasions (13). She scored 10+ in her final 11 games of the year, with four of those going for 20+.
TAYCEE WEDIN – HONORABLE MENTION ALL-WCC
No guard in the WCC has had the kind of season that Taycee Wedin is in the midst of during her sophomore season. Wedin has knocked down 99 threes through the regular season, the most in a single-season in Gaels history, and tied for the most in WCC history (Alyssa Shoji, Santa Clara, 2012). The number of three-pointers made ranks second-best in the NCAA, and her percentage from beyond the arc of 46.3% is fourth-best in WCC history and fourth-best in the nation. 21 times, Wedin made at least three shots from distance, while playing in all 29 games and starting 18. Her 12.8 points per game are also a career-best.
Four different teams split the major awards in the WCC, with Gonzaga's Jill Townsend taking home Player of the Year honors. Cindy Fisher took home Coach of the Year after guiding the San Diego Toreros to a surprise second-place finish in the conference. Sara Hamson of BYU leads the nation in blocked shots with 133, making her an easy choice for Defensive Player of the Year. Alex Fowler of Portland finished second in the conference in scoring and field goal percentage en route to Newcomer of the Year honors.
