BVB | Gaels Win All Three Matches at WCC/Big West Challenge

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Gaels took the WCC/Big West Challenge by storm on Saturday as they walked away with three wins, including a sweep of Sacramento State.
RESULTS vs. SACRAMENTO STATE
Saint Mary's hit the sand ready to go on Saturday as they swept the Hornets and did not allow their opponents to win a single set. Alexsa "Crash" Parker and Selbie Christensen led off the match with a victory that would set the tone for the rest of the day. Elena Baka and Chandler Cowell held Sac State to below ten points in both sets as they quickly handled their opponents. With five straight doubles wins, the Gaels made a strong statement in their first match of the day.

RESULTS vs. CSU BAKERSFIELD
Things got off in a similar fashion in the second contest of the morning, as SMC won their first four doubles against CSU Bakersfield before losing their first pairs contest of the day. Parker and Selbie as well as Baka and Cowell both gave up single set losses, but ultimately beat out their opponents despite losing in the second set. Morgan Kendrick and Karmin Brown defeated the Roadrunners in straight sets as did Sienna Young and Jasmin Suarez. Kelsey Knudsen and Jennifer "Boo" Laird were the only pair who lost against CSUB.

RESULTS vs. CSUN
In the final match of the day CSUN gave Saint Mary's a run for their money, but it was ultimately the Gaels who took the win and their third victory of the Challenge. Parker and Christensen downed their opponent in just two sets, although they were close sets in the end (21-19, 21-17). Knudsen and Laird were also able to defeat their Matador opponents in just two sets, however they won the sets by 12 points and nine points respectively. Baka and Cowell won set one against CSUN before the Matadors won set two, but the Gaels shut it down in the third and capped off Saint Mary's strong showing.
