It is no secret that Saint Mary's Women's Basketball has produced some top-tier talent in recent years, with standout performers on every squad. Often times, these Gaels continue their playing career beyond their time in Moraga and find great success in overseas professional leagues. Today, we highlight the recent performances of several recent graduates of Saint Mary's who are tearing it up in leagues across the world.
Â
Megan McKay – TSV 1880 Wasserburg
Â
Part of a historic and recent four-year run with the Gaels,
Megan McKay '19 has spent her past year playing overseas for TSV 1880 Wasserburg in Germany. McKay stepped right in and provided a significant boost, finishing second on the team with 15.3 points per game and with 8.0 rebounds per game. Not one to shoot the three-ball, McKay finished the 21-game slate shooting at a 64.7% clip from the field, the best mark on her squad. TSV 1880 Wasserburg finished the year 16-5, good for second best in the German DBBL.
Â
A three-time member of the All-WCC team, McKay left her mark on the Gaels by becoming one of the most dominant post players in program history. No Gael has a better lifetime field goal percentage (58.9%) and she has posted the top-two best single-season shooting percentages in program history, while all four of her years rank in the top-ten.
Â
Devon Brookshire - BF Escaudain
Â
Few players enjoyed the type of international success during the 2019-20 season than Devon Brookshire, who was a top-performer for BF Esaudain in France. Before the league saw its playoffs suspended, Brookshire was averaging 21.5 points per game while bringing in 10.3 rebounds per game, accomplishing the rare double-double average. From the line, she was shooting 87%, just adding to her impressive totals for a team that was positioned to make a playoff run.Â
Â
Brookshire was a standout on the court and in the classroom for the Gaels, earning All-WCC honors during the 2015-16 season and becoming a two-time member of the All-Academic team in the conference. Actively, her 2015-16 season still ranks as tenth best in program history for three-point field goal percentage.
Â
Stella Beck – Melbourne Boomers
Â
Five former Gaels are competing in Australia's Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). Beck saw time on the floor for the Melbourne Boomers primarily off the bench, but began to shine later in the year when her minutes saw an uptick. Overall, Beck averaged 5.8 points per game while shooting 60.9% from the floor and 51.4% from three-point range (18-35). Nearing the end of the season, Beck posted her season-high of 17 points against the UC Capitals on January 17. She was named a runner-up for the Sixth Woman of the Year award and receiving the 2019-20 Coache's Player and Deakin University's School of Exercise and Sports Science High Performance award.
Â
Beck was a regular member of the All-WCC team during her run as a Gael, beginning in 2014 and lasting through 2018. She was named to the All-Freshman team in 2015 and followed it up with three All-WCC honors in the years after, while adding WCC All-Academic to her resume in 2016.
Â
Lauren Nicholson – Adelaide Lightning
Â
It was an awfully successful season for the Lauren Nicholson, who helped guide the Adelaide Lightning into the upper half of the WNBL in 2019-20. Nicholson ranked 16
th in the WNBL with 14.2 points per game, and shooting nearly 44% from the floor, while knocking down 31 three-pointers. Four times, Nicholson recorded at least 20 points in a game, including a season-best 32 in her second game of the year on October 13 against the UC Capitals. In addition, Nicholson is one of 19 players vying for a spot on the Australian Opals, who represent Australia in the Olympics. With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on pause until 2021, Nicholson will have to wait to learn her fate.
Â
Few players have had a better season at Saint Mary's than the 2014-15 season from Nicholson, who scored the third-most points in a season with 580, or 17.6 per game. A two-time member of the All-WCC team, Nicholson ranks third all-time in minutes played and second in free throw percentage (84.3%).
Â
Kate Gaze – Townsville Fire
Â
The Townsville Fire did not have the best season in the WNBL, winning just five games across their five-month season. Kate Gaze was limited in her playing time as she came off the bench in her 21 games but saw an up-tick in minutes near the end of the season. Her best performance came against the UC Capitals (something about Gaels and the Capitals, huh?) where she scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting. Over half of her made shots came from three-point range, where she shot at 27.9% from beyond the arc.
Â
A prolific three-point shooter for Saint Mary's, Gaze ranks second all-time in three-pointers made at 195 and second in assists with 388. No Gael has ever played in more games than Gaze, who saw time in 135 games from 2009-14, while playing more minutes than anyone since 2000. Gaze was a two-time member of the All-WCC team, including the All-Freshman team in 2010.
Â
Louella Tomlinson – Southside Flyers
Â
Few Gaels have seen as much international experience as Louella Tomlinson, having begun her international career following her graduation at Saint Mary's in 2011. During the 2019-20 season with the Southside Flyers, she saw limited time off the bench while shooting at 53% from the floor when she got the ball. She also added eight blocks. This marked the sixth season that Tomlinson has played in the WNBL, including multiple seasons in Europe where she has played in Italy and Spain.
Â
Tomlinson was one of the most dominant players in Saint Mary's history, and in certain regards, NCAA history. Tomlinson set the NCAA DI career record for blocks with an incredible 663 across her four seasons (a record that has since been broken), while also holding the NCAA DI record for blocks in a single game (15 – vs. Boise State on Dec. 12, 2009). Tomlinson is the all-time points leader at Saint Mary's with 1,840 points and ranks second in Gaels history in rebounds.
Â
Hannah Kaser – Adelaide Lightning
Â
Playing primarily off the bench during the 2019-20 WNBL season for the Adelaide Lightning, Kaser saw time in 14 games with limited minutes. Every bucket she made on the season came from beyond the arc, continuing to play off the strength of her time as a Gael.
Â
A four-year Gael, Kaser suited up for 107 games from 2012-16, where she shot 38.3% from the field and 35.4% from beyond the arc.Â
