MORAGA, Calif. — Two new talented athletes will be joining the Gaels softball team next year as head coach Sonja Garnett recently announced the signing of incoming freshmen Jojo Bryant and Coie Carter.
Bryant is a fairly local recruit coming out of C.K. McClatchy High in Sacramento. A four year varsity player, the utility piece has been named All-League all four years of her prep career including All-Metro MVP recently. She led her team to three straight league titles and was Team Captain during both her junior and senior seasons.
"Jojo is a fierce competitor who will make an immediate impact on our program," said Garnett of her new recruit.
Bryant was recruited by other notable programs including California, Washington, San Diego State, and Cal Poly. Ultimately, she said she felt most at home at Saint Mary's.
"Saint Mary's is the perfect college for me," she stated. "It checked off every box of my list of needs and going on my visit is what sold me. The community at SMC truly is a family, they take care of each other."
Bryant plans on studying business while in Moraga and hopes to have her own business in the fashion industry down the line or start a non-profit organization.
Carter attended Eleanor Roosevelt High in Eastvale, Calif. down in southern California. Carter is a two-time USSSA Player of the Year who spent all four years on her prep varsity squad. The power hitting middle infielder helped her team reach the CIF playoffs and was also recruited by Oregon and Howard.
"Coie is a solid and versatile athlete who is good on both sides of the ball," told Garnett. "We are excited to coach her and see her contribute to the program."
"I chose Saint Mary's because the girls gave off the vibe of family," said Carter. "I only stayed on campus one night and fell in love with the team."
Carter plans on studying computer science at SMC and would like to work for EA after graduation.
