LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels opened conference play with a 1-0 victory in a very physical match with the University of Portland in front of a full alumni section on alumni weekend last Saturday.
Â
In the 25
th minute speedy freshman
Riley Lynch got behind the Pilots defense after
Sebastian Schacht threaded a pass between two defenders. Riley accelerated into the box, deked a defender, and fired a blistering, right-footed shot that forced the Pilots all-conference keeper to dive to his right and make a one-handed stop.
Â
That set up a golden opportunity for Cade Cowen to pounce on the rebound, out hustling every Portland defender to the loose ball as he flicked it home with his left foot. The pressure from the Gaels gave them a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish as Cowan notched his second goal of the season.
ABOUT USF
The Dons are led by former Saint Mary's Associate Head Coach, Chris Brown. He was the associate head coach for the Gaels from 2011 to 2016, and again from 2019 through the spring 2021 season.
Â
Forward Nonso Adimabua has been named to the annual Preseason West Coast Conference All-WCC Team after being named the 2020-21 WCC Freshman of the Year. Adimabua led the Dons with 11 points on three goals and five assists.
Â
The Gaels are 19-29-5 all time against USF, but have won three in a row against the Dons and seven of their last nine meetings.
