MSOC | Late Goal By Dons Leads to 2-2 Tie for Gaels

SAN FRANCISCO - The Saint Mary's Men's Soccer Team (8-3-1, 1-0-1) had a late goal by USF (1-7-1, 0-1-1) lead to a 2-2 tie in San Francisco on Saturday night for the Gaels first tie of the season.

EARLY FIREWORKS
Just a minute into the match, a corner kick for USF led to a header that caromed off a Gael for 1-0 USF lead. At the 12' mark, the Gaels thought they had a goal when Valentin Kurz set up David Brog in the six-yard box, but the offsides flag had gone up.

But at the 15' mark the Gaels did answer on a corner of their own, as Brog leapt up to head the ball from Lynch and put it in the short side of the net between the keeper and the post to make it a 1-1 game.

The Gaels took a lead in the 27' as Cade Cowan's spectacular, diving header in front of the net put Saint Mary's on top after a cross from Riley Lynch came from the upper-right corner of the penalty area to make it a 2-1 game.

CLOSE CALLS
It looked like the Gaels had a goal by Lynch set up by throw in by Christian Engmann but somehow the ball didn't fully cross the line before the keeper fished it out of the goal mouth. In the 68' minute Engemann almost had a sliding redirection that missed by just inches.

And it was in the 81' that Tobias Wangerud gathered a loose ball at top of the box and shot back against the grain after Lapinid leaned to his left to tie game at 2-2. But Wangerud drew his second yellow card less than a minute later on a vicious tackle of Jan Marpe, forcing the Dons to play a man down. In the 89' Cowan almost put the Gaels ahead on a blast from the top of the box himself but the Dons keeper made his best save of the night with a diving stop.

The two teams went into overtime, and though the Gaels controlled the pace and pressure in both overtime frames, they couldn't crack through. At the 106' mark, Kurz had a shot on net that took an amazing save as well, and just seconds later a Boyd Curry header in the six-yard box was deflected by a defender preventing the Gaels from getting the golden goal.

The Gaels will play a non-conference match at Oregon State on Friday, October 15 at 6:00 p.m.
