MORAGA, Calif. - A late penalty shot for the University of the Pacific Women's Soccer Team (9-1-3, 1-1-1) gave them the equalizer against the Gaels (7-2-3, 1-1-1) leading to a 1-1 tie at Saint Mary's Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Gaels struck early in the match when
Suzuna Shibukawa fed a long pass to
AnnaMaria DiGeronimo who was racing up the right sideline. DiGeronimo got around the corner on two Pacific defenders and fired a tough-angle shot up over the Tigers keeper for a 1-1 lead just over 11 minutes into the game.
Â
DiGeronimo would have a similar opportunity in the 17
th minute that was saved by the Tigers Brenna Crump on a sprawling stop and she made the save on
Alexis Gutierrez' rebound opportunity. The Gaels had one more flurry just a few minutes before halftime by
Emily Jensen and
Ryann Lucas but Crump was up to the task again.
Â
It remained a 1-0 Gaels lead until the 84
th minute when a penalty was called on Saint Mary's in the box, as
Kimaya Cole just clipped a Tigers attacker from the back that led to a penalty shot. UOP's Laila Saravia put the penalty shot in the upper right corner to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
Each team showed some urgency in the final minutes of regulation to avoid overtime but neither could break through. That would remain the case in the extra frames despite two more shots from DiGeronimo that would be blocked.
