MSOC | Gaels Get Senior Day Win on Penalty Shot in OT

MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's Men's Soccer Team finished the 2021 regular season in dramatic fashion, winning 1-0 over San Diego on a penalty kick in overtime.

The Gaels honored their six seniors in the pregame and got a game-winning goal from senior Sebastian Schacht to finish his Saint Mary's career a perfect 6 for 6 on penalty shots. A handball inside the penalty box in the 100th minute led to the penalty shot after the Gaels outshot the Toreros 24-6 overall and had four more corner kicks than San Diego.

Senior Zack Littman got the start in goal for his first career start and made the save of the game in the 23rd minute. A foul was called on Jan Marpe just outside the penalty area, setting up a close-range opportunity for the Toreros. San Diego showed two potential kick takers, with the second player to approach the the ball putting a spectacular, left-footed shot on goal. Littman dove to his right making a two-handing, diving save to keep the ball out of the lower-left corner of the net.

Saint Mary's dominated possession and controlled the area of play, keeping the ball in the San Diego end of the field. Though the Gaels had quantity in shots, the quality didn't quite do enough to challenge the San Diego keeper. That would change when Cade Cowan fired a shot from the top of the penalty area after a slick, back-foot pass from Tyler Hardin. The shot clanged hard off the crossbar over the leaping keeper, as the Gaels just missed winning the game in the 87th minute.

In the 100th minute a waist-high ball was kicked out of mid-air by Boyd Curry and hit the forearm of a San Diego defender in the penalty area. The penalty kick was awarded to the Gaels, and Schacht took the shot one last time in his Gaels career and put one in the top of the net for the 1-0 victory.
