LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels offense erupted in the second quarter and Saint Mary's got big performances from
Ali Bamberger,
Taycee Wedin, and
Madeline Holland on their way to a 79-71 victory over the San Jose State Spartans on Tuesday night at UCU Pavilion to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Â
It was a monster night from Bamberger as she scored 22 points and hauled down 20 rebounds, both career highs for the Walnut Creek, Calif. native, becoming the first SMC Women's Basketball player to have a 20-20 game since Danielle Mauldin had 24 points and 23 rebounds against Gonzaga on December 28, 2013. It was already her fourth double-double of the season and she's had two games scoring in double figures with nine rebounds to narrowly miss having two more double-doubles. Bamberger was 7 of 16 from the field (7 of 13 on two pointers) and 8 of 10 from the free throw line.
Â
Holland also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and led all players with six assists and had two steals, while Wedin led all scorers with 23 points. Saint Mary's shot 42.6% from the floor and out rebounded San Jose State 50-28 and committed just one more turnover than the Spartans.

ABOUT FRESNO STATE
For the second straight year, Fresno State was selected to finish first in the Mountain West as voted on by the league's head coaches and select media, and Reigning MW Player of the Year,
Haley Cavinder, was picked to repeat that feat.
Â
Joining Haley on the preseason All-MW Team is her twin sister,
Hanna Cavinder. The two are the top returning scorers in the league with Haley averaging 19.8 points per game during 2020-21 and Hanna at 17.0.
Â
Haley was also second in the MW in free-throw percentage (.846), fifth in 3-pointers made (2.07), sixth in rebounding (7.54), steals (1.68) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.48), and eighth in assists (3.75). Hanna led the MW in field goal percentage (.464) and finished third in the MW in points per game (17.0), fifth in steals (1.79), sixth in assists (3.89) and seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.45). Both Haley and Hanna were selected to the postseason All-Mountain West Team after each of their first two seasons at Fresno State.Â
Â
The Bulldogs dropped a nail biter to Cal on Thursday night, 73-72. Fresno State shot a season-high 45.2 percent from the field (28-of-62) against a Cal team which was holding opponents to 32.8 percent on the year (No. 22 in NCAA), but couldn't get their shots to fall on their final possession.
Â
The program is coming off a year in which it finished 12-6 in conference play and 17-11 overall. The Gaels are 8-5 all time against Fresno State dating back to 1988. The Bulldogs won the most-recent meeting 90-71 at Fresno State on December 11 of 2020. The Gaels won the game before that in OT 83-81 in Moraga on November 27 of 2015.
