WBB | Latu Erupts for Game High 18 Points in 62-54 Road Win over Grand Canyon
12/7/2025 2:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Saint Mary's capped off a busy three-game road trip this week with a well earned 62-54 victory over Grand Canyon, avenging their buzzer beater defeat to the Lopes in Jeff Cammon's first career game as a Gael back in 2023. Graduate transfer Malia Latu finished with a game high 18 points off the bench to lead Saint Mary's as they finished the afternoon shooting 56% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc for one of their most efficient games of the season.
Saint Mary's led by as many as 15 points and led wire-to-wire for the entire second half, milking possessions and generating high-percentage looks. Second-year guard Jada Hunter had eight points in the second half and led the SMC starters with 12 points on an incredible 86% shooting, missing just one field goal. Nine players recorded a bucket for the Gaels as they continue to be one of the most efficient offenses in the WCC. They've now won two straight and will return home for their final two non-conference games against Fresno State and New Mexico State before the Christmas break.
FIRST HALF SMC 32-23 GCU
Both Saint Mary's and Grand Canyon traded buckets for most of the first quarter, finishing the opening period tied at 15. Melesungu Afeaki got the start again for the Gaels and scored their first four points with some nice positioning inside. The Gaels forced a whopping ten turnovers in the first quarter including a sweet scoop-and-score from Jada Hunter to Malia Latu, tying the game at 15 just before the end of the first quarter.
Saint Mary's continued their offensive efficiency with 17 second quarter points on 7-11 shooting. Hunter had four points in the quarter while Latu connected on the team's first three-pointer of the game to push their lead to seven points just under the four-minute mark.
The Gaels took just one three-pointer in the first half, doing the bulk of their work on the interior. Saint Mary's finished the half 26-8 in paint points and 16-6 in bench points all on 50% shooting while holding the Lopes to just 38% and forcing 18 turnovers. Jada Hunter helped add to the lead on the final possession, going to work with a beautiful turnaround jumper on the baseline as time expired, giving the Gaels a 32-23 lead. Hunter had four points in the half with three assists while Malia Latu led Saint Mary's with ten points off the bench.
FINAL SMC 62-54 GCU
Despite seven turnovers in the third quarter, Saint Mary's made the most of their offensive possessions, finishing the period 6-9 from the field good for 15 points. Grand Canyon only turned the ball over three times and were able to match the Gaels with 15 points but couldn't keep the Gaels out of the paint.
After scoring at the buzzer to end the first half, Jada Hunter did so again to end the third quarter with a contested jumper to put Saint Mary's back up nine. Hunter was 2-for-2 in the period good for four points and finished the game with a team high four steals.
In typical Gaels fashion, Saint Mary's shot 62% from the field over the final ten minutes with more downhill drives and tough floaters inside. Jada Hunter continued to take over as she scored another four points in the period including a nifty floater off the shot fake to give the Gaels a 13-point lead.
Despite another efficient period, the Gaels would not convert a field goal over the final 4:02 of the quarter, allowing a late run from Grand Canyon. The Lopes forced another eight turnovers to help cut the lead down to seven, but time was just not adding up for GCU as Addi Wedin and Malia Latu combined to go 4-for-4 from the free throw line to help ice the game. Both teams turned the ball over 26 times, but Saint Mary's seemed to make the most out of their possessions, shooting a season high 56% from the field while outscoring the Lopes in the paint by 16.
Jada Hunter finished with a career high 12 points to lead all SMC starters while Malia Latu broke out for a season high 18 points, just three off her career high. Edie Clarke owned the glass again with a game high six boards as Emily Foy and Addi Wedin combined for 17 points in the starting lineup.
