SAN JOSE, Calif. – Saint Mary's put an end to their losing streak Thursday night as they held off San Jose State 58-53 for their sixth win of the season, snapping a four-game losing streak. The Gaels took care of the ball with 16 turnovers on the night, their third lowest mark of the season, and shot 42% from the field for balanced scoring from start to finish.
Offensively, the reigning 2025 WCC Sixth Woman of the Year in Emily Foy put together her best performance of the season, leading the Gaels with 16 points and five rebounds off the bench. Addi Wedin was also in double-figures with eleven points on the night as Saint Mary's out rebounded the Spartans 40-34 and showcased their deep bench and versatility, outscoring San Jose State's bench 40-4.
FIRST HALF SMC 30-27 SJSU
Saint Mary's found themselves down by as many as nine points in the first quarter thanks to seven turnovers, but sophomore guard Mauriana Hashemian-Orr pulled the Gaels to within six after a tough three-point play, converting a layup plus the foul with just six seconds remaining on the clock. Abigail Shoff was perfect from the field to start the game, finishing the first quarter with five points and a three ball to help keep the Gaels within striking distance.
Saint Mary's opened up the second quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 18 with five of those points coming from Emily Foy. Foy connected on a corner three to tie the game up and then the Gaels would grab their first lead of the night possessions later with a nifty layup from Addi Wedin in transition, giving them a 22-20 advantage.
Saint Mary's grew their lead to as many as eight points in the quarter but San Jose State did a good job of closing the quarter on a 7-2 run, making it a three-point game at the break. Abigail Shoff hit another two shots in the quarter to lead the Gaels with nine points at the break while Hashemian-Orr and Wedin had five points each. Saint Mary's cut the turnovers down to just two in the period and held the Spartans to nine points on 32% shooting.

The lead grew to ten for Saint Mary's in the third quarter with early buckets from Jada Hunter and Emily Foy. The Gaels were sharing the ball as they had six different scorers in the period with no player scoring more than four points. Malia Latu was 1-for-1 from the field and hit a couple free throws for her four points while Addi Wedin was 2-for-4 in the period, pushing her point total to ten.
After cutting the deficit to four, Latu connected on a pull-up jumper to push the Gaels lead back to six to start the fourth quarter. Saint Mary's has now been tied or led heading into the fourth quarter in four of their last five games but were a combined 0-3 before tonight.
A 6-2 run to start the fourth for San Jose State made it a two-point game but Emily Foy would add to her great night and fend off a late Spartan surge, finishing the fourth quarter with nine points to help seal a 58-53 victory. After the Spartans took a one-point lead for their first of the second half, Foy hit a turnaround jumper at the 3:35 mark to put the Gaels back up one.
After tying the game at 52, Foy answered again with a clutch three-pointer from the top of the arc, giving Saint Mary's a 55-52 lead with three minutes to play in regulation. The Gaels never surrendered the lead after that point, holding San Jose State to just one point while forcing two turnovers over the final few minutes to seal the five-point victory.
