WBB | Bamberger Named WCC Player of the Week
12/6/2021 11:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
SAN MATEO, Calif. — After putting up an historic week on the rebounding side, Ali Bamberger has been named the West Coast Conference's Player of the Week. This is the first win of the award for Bamberger in her career, and the first for a Gael this season.
Fans might be running out of adjectives when it comes to describing the week of basketball that Bamberger put up last week, and for good reason. As Saint Mary's won both their home games, Bamberger was a force on offense and defense. She posted her fourth and fifth double-doubles of the year, scoring 47 points over the two games, including a career-best 25 points on Saturday against Fresno State. Her rebounding totals were arguably more impressive, grabbing 39 rebounds over two games, the best stretch in recent Saint Mary's history. Her 20 rebounds in Tuesday's win over San Jose State was just four off of the program record, and she followed it up with 19 against Fresno State. Bamberger shot 42.4% for the week, and went 19-25 from the free throw line.
Bamberger is the first Gael to win the WCC Player of the Week award since Taycee Wedin did so on January 25, 2021. Bamberger currently leads the WCC in rebounds per game (11.4), and ranks 16th in the country in that stat. She also ranks 11th in the NCAA in free throws made (42) and attempted (57).
The Gaels head out for a road trip later this week, and they won't be in action until Sunday afternoon when they play #2 NC State on December 12. This begins a two-game swing where the Gaels will also play Coastal Carolina on December 15. SMC will not be at home until they are in conference play on January 6.
