WBB | Gaels Prepare for Final Two Home Games of Season

MORAGA, Calif. — It feels strange to say that Saint Mary's Women's Basketball will not have any more home games past February 13, but this season has been unlike any other anyways. With the final two weeks of the season set to commence on the road, Saint Mary's will play host to San Diego on February 11 and BYU on February 13 to wrap up the home portion of their 2020-21 WCC schedule. Saturday's game against BYU will stand as the Gaels' Senior Day.

LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's stayed in the Bay Area last weekend and had to content with a couple of teams that found their strokes offensively in San Francisco and Santa Clara. The Gaels were even with Santa Clara in the fourth quarter, ultimately falling in an 11-point deficit. The Gaels have lost four-straight in the WCC and have not won since beating San Diego inside Jenny Craig Pavilion on January 26. Saint Mary's made 11 three-pointers in the loss to the Broncos, their second-most in a single game this season.

THIS WEEK'S CEREMONIES
The Gaels will have two pre-game ceremonies this week before tip-off. On Thursday night, the Gaels will celebrate Madeline Holland reaching the 1,000-point mark in her Saint Mary's career, just the 24th-player in program history to accomplish this milestone. On Saturday, in their final home game of the season, Saint Mary's will honor their four seniors during Senior Day: Holland, Jordyn Boesel, Emily Codding, and Brianna Simonich.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO
San Diego made a run all the way to the conference finals last year, and they are heating up at the right time. After an extended pause due to COVID-19 complications, the Toreros have won their last four games, including a pair of wins over LMU, a win over Pepperdine, and a win over the defending conference champions – Portland. Against LMU, San Diego relied heavily on their defense, which forced 17 turnovers and scored 25 points off of turnovers. It was a career-game for Steph Gorman, who scored 16 points and recorded seven steals in the win.

ABOUT BYU
BYU wins with defense, and that story has not changed at any point during the 2020-21 season. The Cougars have held their last two opponents to 50 points or less, and have just two defeats in conference play this season. Their offense has cooled off considerably over the last few weeks, but the Cougars still have some of the best players in the WCC. Shaylee Gonzales leads in the conference in scoring with 18.1 points per game, Lauren Gustin is the WCC's leading rebounder at 12.9 per game, and Sara Hamson is one of the best shot blockers in the NCAA, with 41 on the year.
