WSOC | Second Half Goals Hurt Gaels in Loss to Broncos
3/6/2021 10:42:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Saint Mary's hung close with Santa Clara in the first half but two second half goals by the Broncos would be the difference in the 2-0 game.
The Gaels (0-3-2, 0-2-1 WCC) and Broncos went into the halftime break locked up at nil-nil. Despite taking just one shot in the period, Saint Mary's played well and kept the SCU offense at bay with help from their freshman goalkeeper Taylor Poland who made a number of strong saves in the half.
The Broncos (2-0, 2-0 WCC) broke the scoreless tie just 64 seconds into the second half however off a cross to inside of the 6-yard box. The 1-0 score would hold until late in the match when SCU added another goal in the 85th minute courtesy of Kelsey Turnbow.
Saint Mary's had a tough time generating offense in the match as they finished with just three shot attempts and two shots on goal. SCU also limited the Gaels to one corner kick while taking 10 themselves.
Poland posted six more saves in the final 45 minutes to set a new career-high with 11 total saves. The freshman is averaging over seven saves per game so far this year and has a goals against average of just 1.07.
UP NEXT: SAN DIEGO
Saint Mary's hosts San Diego on Mar. 13 in the team's next match. Kickoff is scheduled for noon and the game can be viewed live on the WCC Network.
