MSOC | No. 23 Gaels Fall to No. 10 Lions on Senior Day

MORAGA, Calif. — The No. 23 Gaels (5-2-1, 3-2-1 WCC) played their hearts out in front of a socially-distanced crowd on Sunday at Saint Mary's Stadium but in the end could not complete the West Coast Conference title three-peat as they fell 3-1 to No. 10 Loyola Marymount (6-0-2, 5-0-2 WCC).

Coming out of the halftime break with the score tied 1-1, SMC dominated most aspects of play in the second half with numerous quality scoring chances. The Gaels looked to have had the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute after a beautiful redirect off the head of Boyd Curry but the Lions' goalkeeper Jacob Jackson made a full extension diving stop to keep the score tied.

In the 80th minute, LMU's CJ Neville was issued a red card after a hard tackle giving Saint Mary's a golden opportunity to take the lead but it was the Lions instead who would pull ahead late. A cross into the box in the 89th minute found the foot of Noel Caliskan who put it past Gaels' goalie Nicholas Lapinid to make it a 2-1 game.

Caliskan would end up tallying another goal on a breakaway just a minute later to ice the win for LMU. The Lions clinched the WCC title with the victory as they finished 5-0-2 in league play.

Saint Mary's trailed early in the match as Loyola Marymount got on the board in the 15th minute but would score the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 40th. Curry was taken down from behind on a cross into the box which allowed Sebastian Schacht to score on the PK just moments later. It was the third goal of the year for Schacht with all three coming via the penalty kick.

SMC ended up outshooting LMU 19-13 in the match and the Gaels also took more corners, 7-4. Lucas Andrews and Philippe Van der Lof each led the team with three shot attempts.

The loss snapped an incredible streak for Saint Mary's who had not lost to a WCC opponent in Moraga since Nov. 1, 2015 against San Diego (1-0, 2OT) and had not lost in regulation to a WCC rival since Oct. 31, 2014 (vs. San Francisco, 2-1).

As the final regular season home match of the year, the Gaels celebrated Senior Day and honored their five seniors before kickoff. Paul Ramsey, Younes Dayekh, Miguel Bowden, Nicholas Lapinid, and Lucas Andrews were all recognized pregame.

The Gaels will look to end their season on a high note and build their resume for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament next week in Portland. Kickoff against the Pilots is scheduled for 1 p.m.
