SAN MATEO, Calif. — The West Coast Conference announced this season's all-conference awards today with seven different Gaels earning recognition including three First Team honors.
Lucas Andrews, Sebastian Schacht, and Christian Engmann all landed on the First Team for head coach Adam Cooper's club. The three Gaels play forward, midfielder, and defender, respectively.
The senior Andrews earned his first ever all-conference honor after jumping into a starting role this year. The San Jose native tied for second in the WCC in goals (4) and was tied for third in points (10) while leading SMC in both categories. His 22 shot attempts led Saint Mary's by a large margin and ranked sixth in the conference. Andrews scored the game-winner against Gonzaga on Mar. 14 and notched a goal and assist in his final collegiate match against Portland.
Schacht continued his excellent collegiate career by being named All-WCC for the third straight year. The First Team selection is the second time the midfielder has received the award in addition to being named WCC Freshman of the Year and All-Freshman Team in 2018. In addition to helping SMC post four clean sheets, the Kiwi recorded seven points and three goals. He was a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty kick attempts - one of which was the game-winner in the team's season opener versus Pacific.
Engmann made a huge impact on the Gaels' backline in his first season in Moraga and was named to the All-WCC First Team and Freshman Team as a result. Coming out of Shoreline, Washington, Engmann played every minute for Saint Mary's this season and limited opponents to score just nine times in nine matches. The defender recorded his first career point against Gonzaga with an assist and then posted a 3-point performance two weeks later against USF with a goal and another assist.
Moving onto the Second Team, sophomore Boyd Curry picked up his first-ever conference recognition. Curry was an integral part of Saint Mary's backline who also proved to be a weapon on set pieces this year. In eight matches, the defender scored three times and also tallied one assist. All three of Curry's goals ended up being game-winners.
Nicholas Lapinid and Valentin Kurz were also selected as All-WCC Honorable Mentions. Lapinid started every match in goal for the Gaels and made 30 saves which was second in the conference. Kurz played 645 minutes while manning the midfield for SMC and had an assist in the team's April 3 match versus Pacific.
Last but not least, Andrew Rotter was the seventh Gael to be selected to an all-conference squad and was placed on the Freshman Team. Rotter played all nine matches and started in the final eight. In his first career start against Santa Clara, the forward scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute. Rotter tacked on another goal later in the year against the Broncos on Mar. 21. He also tied for third on the team with nine shots with four coming on net.
