TRK | Long-Distance School Record Set over Final Weekend
5/16/2021 5:01:00 PM | Men's Track and Field
Saint Mary's Track wrapped up the regular season this past weekend with their squad split up into two locations: long-distance runners went down south to Azusa Pacific, while the rest of the runners stayed local and traveled across the Bay to Santa Clara. To no one's surprise, there was another school record set this past weekend, and Saint Mary's closed out the regular season strong in the head-to-head portion of their meet against the Broncos.
WHOLE LOT OF WOHLENBERG
Coming on strong at the end of the season, Hannah Wohlenberg continued to impress as she ran on Friday night at Azusa Pacific. A usual in the 5000m race, Wohlenberg cranked it up to another level on Friday as she was the lone Gael to run in the 10000m on the women's side, and she excelled in it. She set a personal record and a Saint Mary's record with a time of 36:07.52, a mark that is good enough for second place overall in the event behind Gianna Sbarbaro of San Diego. In this season alone, Wohlenberg has set four personal records after transferring from LMU, and she saved her best for last in 2021.
LONG TIME COMING
Also running on Friday night was Nolan Dozier, who took part in the 10000m on the men's side and continued to make his way into the SMC record book. Dozier also earned a second-place finish, like Wohlenberg, with his time of 29:53.81. More impressive than just his overall finish was that he became just the third Gael all-time to run the 10000m race in less than 30 minutes, setting a personal record in the process. Time will tell if Dozier has a chance to compete at the NCAA Prelims at the end of the month, but if not, what a 2021 spring it was for Dozier.
SUNDAY FUNDAY
The rest of the Gaels were off and running against Santa Clara and a handful of unattached runners on Sunday. On the women's side, there were five head-to-head events between the two schools, and Saint Mary's won in three of them. Rayna Stanziano won the 800m race with her time of 2:09.19, finishing a second back of her existing school record but still plenty fast enough to beat her teammate, Abigayle Mitchell, who took second. Four Gaels teamed up (Brianna Alvarado, Molly Dreher, Stanziano, and Mitchell) to win the 4x400m relay race over the Broncos, winning by nearly five seconds with a time of 4:04.83. Perhaps the biggest highlight from the women on Sunday came from Jiana Cortero, who was the lone Gael running in the 3000m, but she made the most of it, besting the field by over three seconds with her time of 10:20.63 and snagging a win for SMC. For the men, two 4x400m relay teams were formed, and it was the group of Isaiah Jimenez, Angel Castro, Alex Riggsby, and Dozier who earned second place with a mark of 3:37.09.
