SAN MATEO, Calif. — Not only has the Saint Mary's Men's Soccer program compiled the best three-year record of any program in the NCAA DI, but they have also found a lot of success off the pitch. Just announced by the West Coast Conference, Greg Brighton lands on the WCC All-Academic First Team, while eight other Gaels are honorable mention recipients, giving SMC a grand total of nine honored by the conference. Only Santa Clara featured more scholar-athletes.
Greg Brighton saw time in eight games this season for Saint Mary's, including his first two collegiate starts. He played a season-high in minutes during the Gaels season opener when they took down Pacific in the second overtime. While he didn't register a point, he came close to scoring with a pair of shots on goal in the Gaels home win over Gonzaga on March 14. Brighton has the second-highest GPA of any soccer player in the conference, carrying a 3.98 GPA as a Biology major, and is one of five sophomores who made first team.
Eight other Gaels find themselves receiving honorable mention nods from the WCC, including some of the team's top performers. Sebastian Schacht was on the All-WCC First Team and the All-Region team, and carries a 3.34 GPA as a Business Administration major in the process. Boyd Curry joined Schacht on the All-Region team and also excelled as a Business Administration major, with a 3.36 GPA. Lucas Andrews was recently named an All-Region Scholar while graduating with a 3.45 GPA as a Kinesiology major (Sports and Recreation Management). The other Gaels to earn honorable mention selections were Miguel Bowden (3.61, Business Administration), David Brog (3.80, Business Administration), Younes Dayekh (3.64, Communication), Valentin Kurz (3.86, Psychology – Neuroscience), and Philippe Van der Lof (3.48, Economics).
