GOLF | Hathcoat Among Four Gaels to Earn WCC All-Academic

SAN MATEO, Calif. — The West Coast Conference announced their annual All-Academic team for men's golf on Thursday afternoon, and the Gaels landed four golfers on the list. Included amongst the honorees is Blake Hathcoat, who has been named to the All-Academic First Team for the fourth time in his SMC career.
For Hathcoat, being eligible four years on the All-Academic team was made possible by the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing him to return for an extra season. He made the most of it in 2020-21, leading the Gaels with an average score of 71.3 per round, with a low round of 63 this season. His average round score is good for third best in SMC history, and his 63 in the first round of The Goodwin tied the lowest score in program history. Hathcoat wound up winning The Goodwin and the La Purisima Invite this past season, en route to All-WCC honors. Hathcoat holds a 3.80 GPA with a Master's in Business Administration.
A trio of other Gaels found themselves on the honorable mention list: Evan Peterson, Michael Slesinski, and Dylan VanderVeer. Like Hathcoat, Peterson and VanderVeer used their extra years to complete Master's while winding up scholar-athletes. Slesinski is the lone "senior" on the list, a Business Administration major with a GPA of 3.29.
To make the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 grade point average while contributing significantly to their team.
