Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Saint Mary's Men's Soccer improved to 5-3 on the season after taking advantage of a penalty shot in the 72nd minute at Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon. A cross from
David Brog went directly into the six-yard box and a collision between Cade Cowen and the Hornets goalkeeper led to a foul on Sac State.
Cowen had just checked back into the game for the set piece and leaped in the air for a chance at a header when he and the keeper collided in mid air. Two yellow cards were subsequently called after Hornets players argued with the referee over the foul call.
Sebastian Schacht took the penalty kick and buried it in the upper right corner of the net to put the Gaels up 1-0.
The chippy play would continue though as Cowen was issued a yellow card himself in the 76th minute after a collision near midfield,
Gael Quintero was previously issued one in the 32nd minute of the first half and the Hornets were issued a red card in the game's final minute. Despite the tension between the two teams, the Gaels defense kept the Hornets from being able to muster up much of anything offensively, and
Kash Oladapo made the two save he had to and preserved the shutout.
