ABOUT THE SAINT MARY'S INVITATIONAL
Last year Hoey finished second out of 104 golfers at the 2021 tournament. The De La Salle grad would finish just three strokes out of first place with a 205 in three rounds on the par 71 course, to finish 8-under par for the tournament.
Â
Connor Reis finished 2-under par and tied for ninth overall after shooting a 211 in the three rounds. The Gaels as a team climbed back up to their day-one placing to finish sixth of 19 teams after finishing 2-under par as a group in round three.
Â
The Invitational originally began in 2006 at Poppy Hills before moving four years later to Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses in nearby Seaside, Calif. for the next five years. The 2022 tournament will mark the 11th time the event has been played at Poppy Hills. The tournament has featured 12 different team champions in its history with San Diego State, USC, and 2022 winner Oregon all taking the title twice. Colorado St. won the 2019 tournament with a 25-under par combined score.
Â
The USC Trojans set the tournament's 54-hole all-time low score in 2017 when they shot 28-under par. The previous record was held by Oregon at 11-under. Justin Suh shot 13-under that year to break the individual record which was tied in 2019 by BYU's Peter Kuest. Kuest set the 18-hole low record in 2018 as well when he shot 61 in the opening round.
Â
Poppy Hills became the first course to be owned and operated by a golf association in the U.S. when the Northern California Golf Association built it to serve as its headquarters and tournament home. After opening on June 1, 1986, the Robert Trent Jones Jr. design has since co-hosted the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991 through 2009, as well as the Spalding Pebble Beach Invitational (1989, 1990, 1992, 1993) and 1991 NCAA Men's Championships.
Â
Poppy Hills underwent an extensive renovation beginning in March of 2013 centered around water conservation, primarily by improving irrigation and drainage. Jones returned to Poppy Hills with his Robert Trent Jones II design firm, this time creating a firm, fast and fun course that unfolds seamlessly through the stunning Del Monte Forest.
Â
Jones reinvented the course architecturally, re-storing each hole to its natural elevation along the forest floor, softening doglegs and contours, rebuilding all 18 greens with bent grass, eliminating rough and introducing native waste areas that reduce irrigated turf by nearly 25%. The new Poppy Hills reopened April 4, 2014 and has hosted the Champions Tour's Pure Insurance Championship in conjunction with the First Tee Program.
