WTEN | Gaels Finish in Style at SMC Fall Invite

 MORAGA, Calif. –  The Saint Mary's Women's Tennis team finished off the third and final day at the SMC Fall Invite in triumphant fashion, as Gabriela Tevez and Olivia Rook both competed in finals. 
 
GAELS SEEING DOUBLE
Sunday doubles kicked off the final day of the SMC Fall Invite, as the Gaels had two teams in action. 
 
Jamie Pope and Gabriela Tevez took on Santa Clara's Varya Zlotnik and Dasee Carter. The Gaels duo was tested, as the match to a tiebreak, with both teams tied at six games apiece. Pope and Tevez turned on the burners in the tiebreaker, winning 7-2, and winning the match 7-6.
 
The Saint Mary's duo of Olivia Rook and Stefanie Silva also competed in doubles on Sunday, as they faced off against Cal State Fresno's Carlotta Nonnis Marzano and Cristina Flaquer. The Bulldogs duo got off to a quick start and never looked back, beating Rook and Silva 6-2. 
 
ROOK AND ROLL
On the single's side, Gabriela Tevez continued her dominance in the red bracket, beating Sacramento State's Grace McSkimming 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the red bracket final on Sunday afternoon. 
 
Tevez faced Portland's Alaia Rubio Perez, where she faced her toughest contest of the weekend. Rubio Perez got off to a rapid start, winning the first set 6-1. Tevez stayed composed and slowly battled back, winning the second set 6-2. 
 
With everything to play for, the two headed into the third set. Tevez continued to play consistent tennis, but Rubio Perez charged back to steal the set 7-5 and win the match in the third set. 
 
In the blue consolation bracket, two familiar faces matched up against each other in the semifinals. After both winning their quarterfinal matches on Saturday in exciting fashion, teammates Olivia Rook and Stefanie Silva faced off for a spot in the blue consolation final. 
 
Silva got off to the quicker start, taking the first set 6-3. Rook bounced back in a big way, taking the second set in exciting 7-5 fashion. 
 
It was only fitting the two teammates went to a tiebreak, as bragging rights were at stake. Both players fought for every point, and it was Olivia Rook in the end that prevailed, winning the tiebreak 10-6, thus winning the match. 
 
In the blue consolation finals, Rook took on Pacific's Ruja MiaAngelina. The two battled throughout the first set, demanding a tiebreaker to decide the winner. 
 
MiaAngelina got the better of Rook, winning the tiebreak 8-6, and the first set 7-6. Rook was un-phased and stuck to her game, and it paid off in the second set. She went on to win 6-4, with the match to be decided in another tiebreak. 
 
Rook was not to be denied on Sunday, winning the tiebreak 10-6. Rook finished off her exciting weekend with a comeback win in the blue consolation finals, winning the match, 6-7, 6-4 (10-6). 
 
Jamie Pope played in Sunday singles match as well, facing off against the Academy of Art's Julia Ortega. Pope got off to solid start, but her competitor quickly found her rhythm, winning the match in two sets, 6-2, 6-1.

UP NEXT
The Gaels are done competing for the fall, as they'll continue to train throughout the end of the year. They'll pick back up after the new year, competing in the Cal Winter Invite from January 13-15.
