MORAGA, Calif. — After tying the program record for most consecutive home wins with Monday night's season-opening 78-70 win over Oral Roberts, the Gaels get back to work with two more games to close out the week. Saint Mary's will host the Vermont Catamounts on Thursday night before welcoming in the Mean Green of North Texas for a Sunday evening affair. Both games will be broadcast live on the WCC Network.

LAST TIME OUT
The much-anticipated home opener for Saint Mary's Men's Basketball lived up to the hype on Monday night. The Gaels began their 2022-23 season with a home contest against Oral Roberts, pitting two of the premier mid-major programs in the NCAA against one another. Behind a near-sellout crowd on opening night, the Gaels were able to race out to a large halftime lead and hang on for a 78-70 win to kickstart the season. With the win, Saint Mary's tied the program record for most consecutive home victories (19). The only other home winning streak that reached 19 games began on January 16, 2010 and lasted until February 5, 2011. The current winning streak began on February 22, 2021.
 
HE'S PRETTY GOOD
Monday marked the collegiate debut of Aidan Mahaney, the local product from Lafayette who graduated from Campolindo High School just down the road. He was dazzling in his first game, playing 26 minutes off the bench and leading all players with 25 points on 8-19 shooting, including 5-12 from the beyond the arc. His 25 points scored in his collegiate debut are the most points scored by a Gael in his collegiate debut in the Randy Bennett era. He was important in both halves, scoring 13 in the first and making some big free throws in the second half en route to 12 points.
 
ABOUT VERMONT
The Catamounts began their season with an 80-65 win at home on Monday night against Brown University, using a very efficient night on all fronts to get the job done. They shot 53.8% from the floor, 43.5% from three-point range, and made 14 of 15 free throws. Aaron Deloney had a monster game, scoring a career-best 32 points in just 31 minutes on the floor. Vermont was chosen first in the America East Preseason Poll, getting seven of nine first place votes. They also have a pair of preseason all-conference selections in Dylan Penn and Finn Sullivan. They've made the NCAA Tournament four times under head coach John Becker, including last season when they were a No. 13 seed and dropped their first game to Arkansas.
 
ABOUT NORTH TEXAS
If there was a team that plays most similar to Saint Mary's, it might be the Mean Green. They use an efficient offense, a stout defense, and they grind the game to a halt, playing with the slowest adjust tempo during the 2021-22 season, according to KenPom. For comparison, Saint Mary's was 339 out of 358 while North Texas sat at 358. They won their first game of the season in that type of fashion, taking down Southern Nazarene 53-47. They were an NIT team last year after making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2021. Only four players scored in their season-opening win: Abou Ousmane (23), Kai Huntsberry (20), Aaron Scott (7), and Christian Moore (3).
