SAN MATEO, Calif. – Saint Mary's Men's Soccer had nine players named to the 2022 WCC Men's Soccer All-Academic Team, including Riley Lynch being named to the All-Academic First Team.
Not only did Lynch finish second on the team in points with nine, the Communication Strategy major had a 3.744 GPA in 2022 to receive SMC's nod for the first team, with eight other Gaels receiving honorable mention.
Seniors Greg Brighton, Boyd Curry, and Valentin Kurz, juniors Cade Cowan, Tyler Hardin, Timothy Stephens, and Louis Sterobo, along with sophomore Jack Vestberg were all named WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention.
Vestberg led the team in GPA with a 3.967, as the Data Science major was also tied for third on the team in points with seven. Last year's GPA leader, Brighton, had a 3.964 GPA to finish .003 behind Vestberg, and the Biology major had a career high five points this season.
The requirements for nominees to the WCC All-Academic Team included a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average based on the most recently completed term at the time of the nomination. For soccer, it was the 2022 spring term.
The player had to be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. They also had to have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution, so true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and athletic transfers could not be nominated.
