GOLF | John A. Burns Intercollegiate Up Next for Gaels in Hawaii

LIHU'E, KAUA'I, Hawaii - Saint Mary's Golf heads to Hawaii to take part in the 45th John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course Hokuala hosted by the University of Hawai'i.
 
This will be the first time this prestigious tournament will be held on this course, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus.  
 
"I put forth my best effort in the design process," The golfing legend said. "The quality of conditioning, maintenance, and playing experience is important to me. It all reflects on my name and brand. It's reassuring Timbers Resorts is willing to make a commitment to ensure that the product I have produced is taken care of, enjoyed, and thought well of for generations to come."
 
The format will consist of three days and 54 holes, with a full 18 holes played each day, from Thursday, February 17th, to Saturday, February 19th. The shotgun start will kick off each day at 8:30 am and can be tracked via the tournament's GolfStatLink.
 
THE LINEUP
The Gaels lineup for this week will be: Michael Slesinski, Dylan VanderVeer, Mitchell Hoey, Connor Reis, Kristian Bressum on the team score, and Zack Missigman will participate as an individual.
 
THE FIELD
Competing alongside Saint Mary's in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate will be Hawai'i, Arizona, Brigham Young, California, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, New Mexico, Northern Colorado, Santa Clara, Texas A&M, UC Irvine, UNLV, USC, Utah, UTEP, and Washington State.    
 
JOHN A. BURNS INTERCOLLEGIATE HISTORY
This tournament did not take place last year due to Covid-19, but in 2020, the Gaels finished tied for seventh out of the 21 schools participating with a team score of 2-over par. Saint Mary's Mikey Slesinksi finished finished 4-under par and tied for seventh out of 123 golfers. No. 4 Texas A&M won the tournament in 2020 finishing 19-under par. In the previous year, the Gaels finished 6th with a score of 11-under.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels first tournament of the spring season was the Arizona Intercollegiate. Located in Tucson, Arizona, the tournament was held at the Tucson Country Club, where the Gaels had trouble executing their short game. Saint Mary's finished 13th of 14 with a final score of +8. Freshman Kristian Bressum was able to score even par to finish T34, the best individual score for the Gaels on the weekend.
