SAN DIEGO – There was no comeback to force extra innings on Saturday night for the Gaels, as the Toreros took game two by a score of 4-1.
Saint Mary's got a solo home run from
Dalton Mashore, the first of his collegiate career, to cut the San Diego lead to 2-1 in the fifth inning, but were left stuck on the one run.
The Gaels had a scary moment in the bottom of the second, when shortstop Hunter Hiriyama collided with left fielder
Nathan Chong and Hiriyama was removed from the game with a lower leg injury.
The Toreros would score in the second with two outs for a 1-0 lead and they would get another run in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly.
Chris Santiago came in for
Christopher Campos, as one two-way star for the Gaels replaced another. Santiago would induce a double play after checking in to limit the damage.
Campos went 3.1 innings allowing just two runs on two walks and four strikeouts. Satiago would pitch a clean inning. The Toreros got two more runs late off swingman
Ryan Taurek in the eighth.
SMC threatened in the seventh after Taurek drew a walk,
Blake Mann singled, but after a Toreros pitching change, a strikeout of Mashore ended the inning.
