BASE | Gaels Win Second-Straight WCC Series

MORAGA, Calif. – The Gaels won their second-straight WCC series on Sunday after a 7-3 win over Pepperdine University at Louis Guisto Field. Saint Mary's kept putting baserunners on and forced the Waves into fielding errors by keeping the pressure on their defense.

Meanwhile the Gaels went without committing an error and are 9-0 when they play error-free baseball. They also got a quality start from Ryan Wiltse as he went six innings allowing just two runs with two walks and five strikeouts to improve to 3-0. Nathan Schneider pitched the final three innings to collect his second save of the season while allowing just one run with no walks and two punch outs.

The Waves committed three errors in the first inning alone, allowing Gavin Napier to reach and score on an error. Wild pitches brought Napier and Kyle Velazquez home in the third inning to make it 3-1 Gaels.

A pair of base knocks extended the Gaels lead in the fourth when Dalton Mashore doubled down the right field line to plate Nathan Chong and Napier singled to center to drive in Mashore for a 5-1 SMC lead. Another wild pitch by the Waves would again allow Napier to score and it was 6-1 Saint Mary's going into the fifth.

A solo home run by the Waves in the sixth made it 6-2 Gaels, but Saint Mary's answered with a sac fly from Napier to drive in Mashore to put the Gaels back up by five runs. The Waves would scratch across a run in the ninth for a sac fly, but that was all they could muster against Schneider he closed out the series win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Napier had a monster day going 2 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBI for his 11th multi-hit game and fifth multi-RBI game of the season. The Gaels are now 17-3 when Napier is in the leadoff spot of the SMC order. Mashore scored twice while going 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Velazquez extended his on-base streak to 10 games.
