LEXINGTON, Ky. — The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Wednesday their second class of the Thirty Under 30 beach coaches, and Lindsey Calvin of Saint Mary's has been selected as one of the recipients.
The awards program, created in 2021, honors up-and-coming beach coaches at all levels of the sport—college, high school, and club—and the recipients serve in a range of roles, from head coach to volunteer assistant to club director. Nominees had to be younger than 30 years old in 2021 to qualify for the award.
"I owe this award in part to my fellow coaches, but mostly to our student-athletes," Calvin said. "They inspire me and I love what I do because of them. I'm so grateful and honored to represent our SMCVB family."
Calvin is in her first season as assistant coach for the beach volleyball team at Saint Mary's, and the Gaels have won 15 matches with Calvin on staff. She enjoyed a successful career at Saint Mary's playing both indoor and beach volleyball, where she capped off her Gael career by reaching the quarterfinals of the USA Beach Championships in 2019. Calvin accumulated 55 beach wins over four seasons, and was First Team All-WCC in addition to First Team All-Academic in the WCC twice.
"Lindsey is a worthy recipient of the AVCA Thirty under 30 Beach Volleyball award," head coach Rob Browning spoke about Calvin. "She is one of our outstanding alumnae and a fantastic role model for our student-athletes. She certainly deserves this kind of recognition. We are so fortunate to have her with us."
Calvin is a 2019 graduate of Saint Mary's with an English degree, and is actively completing her Master of Education in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership from the University of Washington.
With the regular season over for beach volleyball, Saint Mary's will now prepare for the 2022 West Coast Conference Championship, beginning on April 29 and ending on April 30. The double-elimination tournament will feature every beach team in the WCC, and Saint Mary's will enter the tournament as the third seed. Last season, Saint Mary's finished third overall after starting the tournament as the third seed.
