BVB | Gaels Split Pair of Nail-Biters against UC Davis and San Jose State

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Saint Mary's beach volleyball team played its final two regular season matches away from home, splitting their matches against UC Davis (L, 1-4) and San Jose State (W, 3-2). Still with West Coast Conference postseason on the docket on the neutral sands of Santa Monica, the Gaels moved their record away from Shaw and Knudsen Courts to a stellar 22-8.
The Gaels dropped a heartbreaker to UC Davis to open up day two in Stockton. While the scoreline reads 4-1, that is far from the full story of this match, as three of the five flights needed a decisive third set, with all three of those needing extra points to decide at least one of the sets. At the ones, Genevieve Bane and Zoe Joshua won set one, but were forced to a third, where they narrowly lost, 19-17. It was a similar story at the twos for Angelina Bour and Clarissa Klein, who won their first set by a whopping tally of 30-28, but fell in the next two. The Gaels lone win in the dual came at the threes, as Hannah Couch and Isla Johnson erased a one set deficit, taking set two 23-21, and the deceive set three 17-15 to move to 6-1 together for the year.
Match two was just as tight as match one for the Gaels, but this time resulted in a 3-2 victory over San Jose State. The Gaels picked up wins from their ones (Genevieve Bane and Zoe Joshua), their threes (Hannah Couch and Isla Johnson) and their fours (Bella Reyes and Alisia Silverthorn), with Couch and Johnson picking up the clinching point.
The Gaels cap their week with a 3-1 record. At the threes, Isla Johnson and Hannah Couch went unbeaten, moving their record to 7-1 when playing together. Freshman Zoe Joshua notched her first two collegiate wins, playing with senior Genevieve Bane in the top-flight.
The Gaels will return home for Senior Day against WCC rival San Francisco, taking place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 18.
