MSOC | Win Streak Up to Four After Shutout of Cal Poly
9/17/2022 9:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Saint Mary's Men's Soccer won their fourth-straight game on Saturday night, defeating Cal Poly 1-0 on their second shutout of the season to improve to 5-2 on the year.
In the 15th minute the Gaels started to put on the pressure on the Mustangs, as the home team committed multiple fouls leading to set pieces and possession time for SMC.
Christian Engmann headed away a pass by the Mustangs when they were on the attack, and Valentin Kurz played the ball forward to Omar Yehya. He swung it wide to Riley Lynch, who dribbled the ball up field and pulled up just outside the upper right corner of the penalty area.
Lynch passed across to the middle of the field to Cade Cowan who quickly passed it to the left to Wade Muttitt, and the transfer from Feather River College put a right-footed shot into the upper right corner of the net over the leaping keeper from 12 yards out to put SMC up 1-0 in the 16th minute. It was Muttitts first goal as a Gael, Lynch's fourth assist of the season, and Cowan's second.
Cal Poly tried to answer just a minute later when a long cross pass from the near sideline went all the way to the left side of the goal and was headed towards an open net. But Engmann was there to head it away before the ball could completely cross the goal line. The Mustangs pled their case that it did cross the line, but the referee's assistant ruled it did not.
Kash Oladapo stopped a one-on-one break away against a Cal Poly attacker in the 54th minute. The Gaels keeper made the stop by coming out and cutting down the angle, despite the shot briefly knocking the wind out of him, leading to a brief stoppage in play.
SMC threatened in the 56th minute on an Engmann header was just high and the Mustangs keeper made a diving shot to his right on a Muttitt shot as the Gaels came close to a 2-0 lead. Cowan had a similar left-footed shot as Muttitt's attempt that also took a diving attempt by the keeper in the 63rd minute.
Cal Poly almost had spectacular equalizers on an attempted bicycle kick that came up just short and to the right in the 58th minute and a cross that was just out of the reach of a header attempt in the 61st minute. But after that the Gaels limited the chances for the Mustangs and held on for the 1-0 win.
