SAN MATEO, Calif. — It might officially be a new year, but Aidan Mahaney continues to do what helped him get off to such a good start in 2022. After the first week of conference play, Mahaney has been named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week, already his fourth time winning the award during his first collegiate campaign.
Mahaney led the way for the Gaels as they opened up WCC play with a perfect 2-0 record for the first time since 2017-18. Mahaney led all Gaels with 18 points in a road win at Santa Clara, and averaged a team-best 16.5 points per game for the week, while shooting 55.6% from the field and going 3-7 from beyond the arc.
He now has scored 11 or more points in 12-straight games, the longest streak on the Gaels this season. Not only has Mahaney been scoring points in bunches lately, but he has seen improved play on both ends of the floor. He's shooting at a 50.6% clip over his last seven games, and has 19 assists with 10 steals.
After eight weeks of the award during the season, Mahaney remains the only freshman in the West Coast Conference to win the award multiple times. Only Drew Timme (three times, including this week) and Brandin Podziemski (twice) have won a player of the week award on more than one occasion.
The Gaels will take a brief hiatus from West Coast Conference play and host their final non-conference game of the regular season when they host the Academy of Art on Tuesday, January 3 inside University Credit Union Pavilion. This DII game will be the only midweek game on the docket for the Gaels in the first week of January, as they host Portland on Saturday, January 7 as part of a doubleheader with the women.
