WSOC | SMC takes on Gonzaga in Moraga

MORAGA, Calif - Saint Mary's Women's Soccer are back in Moraga this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to take on Gonzaga, who are receiving votes for the top 25 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
The Gaels have an all-time record of 14-14-2 against the Bulldogs. Gonzaga was one of the Gaels last game of the 2022 season where SMC lost 2-0. The Bulldogs are on a three game win streak in the conference beating San Diego, Portland, and San Francisco, shutting out the Toreros and the Dons.

THE LAST TIMEOUT
Saint Mary's fought hard in Malibu, Calif this past Saturday where they lost to Pepperdine 3-0.
Just a minute into the game Emma Barthel took a shot that missed to the left of the goal. The Waves outshot the Gaels 19-9 throughout the entire game. Pepperdine attempted six shots before breaking through on their seventh, where Taylor Poland made four great saves for the Gaels. The Waves then had another two attempts before scoring their second goal of the half in the 34th minute when they gathered up a loose ball after the Gaels blocked an initial shot.
In the 37th and 39th minute, Poland made two more solid saves to keep the Gaels in it. Three minutes remaining in the first half, Savannah Schwarze almost cut the deficit to one on a shot that missed just left of the goal.
SMC and Pepperdine both attempted six shots in the second half, but the Waves scored in the 48th minute to make it a 3-0 lead. The Gaels kept trying to put one in the back of the net, where Marsisa Garcia took a shot straight on where the Waves goalkeeper, Taylor Rath, saved it. Eight seconds later, Emily Jensen attempted one to the top right side of the goal where it was once again saved by Rath. Not even two minutes later, Jesen took another shot that was blocked by a Waves defender. Saint Mary's put up three more shots, but Pepperdine kept Saint Mary's from getting on the board and preserved the shutout.
ABOUT GONZAGA
The Bulldogs are coming off of a strong 2022 season with a 10-3-5 record. They began the 2023 season with a four game win streak against Trinity Eastern, Houston Christian, Hawaii, and Weber State. The Bulldogs are currently on a three game win streak in conference play. They have shutout a total of six teams so far this season.
A Junior on the Bulldogs roster, Kelsey Olyer, set a new single season assist program record and career assist program record in their 5-0 win against San Diego at her home field, Luger Field. Going into their game against the Toreros, Olyer only needed one assist to set the program record for most in a season and three to set the new career mark. She entered the game with a total of seven assists in the season, which was tied for the most all-time at Gonzaga. It is now her third time in the last three games where Oyler had three assists in a game, The Meridian, Idaho, and San Diego. She now has 20 assists under her belt as a Bulldog.
