PALO ALTO, Calif. - Gaels doubles combo of Tian Yu Don and Julliette Daries advanced to the quarterfinals on day three of the ITA Regional Championships, before a loss to Cal.
Dong and Daries defeated Fresno State duo Yinglak Jittakoat and Matilde Magrini, 8-3. The Fresno State pairing was the No. 2 team in the tournament and were ranked No. 23 in the ITA preseason ranking.
The SMC duo moved on to the quarterfinals where they fell short to Cal Tandem Mishima and Viller Moeller, 8-2. The Cal combo is seeded No. 7 in the large tournament field.
"They've been playing pretty aggressively and it has paid off," Coach Katharina Winterhalter said of Dong and Daries. "This afternoon they got off to a good start but then struggled a bit with their execution and Cal played a good match. This (the quarterfinals) was a great run for them and we look forward to building on this."
"It has been great getting a lot of matches under our belt this weekend," Winterhalter added. "The team continues to learn and grow. We have a couple of weeks of practice before our next tournament (the SMC Fall Invite) so we will get to work and then look forward to playing on our home courts."
UP NEXT:
Gaels will compete in Moraga at home for the SMC Fall Invite starting October 27.
