Saint Mary's Men's Soccer scored early, but the Santa Clara Broncos put three unanswered goals in the back of the net for a 3-1 loss in the West Coast Conference opener for the Gaels.

SMC got the scoring started when
Luke Lawrence lofted a pass into the penalty area that caromed off a Santa Clara defender's back, after he had turned to look up expected the ball to go over his head. The Santa Clara keeper expected the same and came out to play the ball. But the deflection off the defender's back landed right next to
Wade Muttitt, who put a right-footed shot into the net to make it 1-0 Gaels just 16 seconds into the match.

The Broncos scored in the 39th, 44th, and 65th minute however after stifling the Gaels offense to get the win.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO
The San Diego men's soccer program was ranked as high as No. 12 by the United Soccer Coaches, this year after recording season-opening victories at Seattle and then No. 6 Washington.

It was their first national ranking since the 2019 season and their highest national ranking since Dec. 11, 2012, when they were also ranked No. 12 in the nation following a run to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. They have since slid out of the top 25, but were still receiving votes as recently as two weeks ago.

Reigning WCC Defender of the Year, Trevor Dillon, has continued his high-level play at the center back position and leading the team in minutes with 982 so far this year. In addition, Dillon has a goal and one assist for three points through 11 starts, and is the reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Week.

Fellow seniors Ross Johnstone and Mason Tunbridge were named to the WCC All Preseason Team along with Dillon. The Toreros (44) were picked to finish second in the WCC, finishing just two votes shy of Portland (46) for the top spot. Both teams received four first-place votes apiece.

Tunbridge returns for his fifth collegiate season, after leading the Toreros in goals (six), assists (five) and points (17) last season. A native of London, England, Tunbridge was a 2022 All-West Region First Team honoree and had several clutch moments throughout the season, scoring a hat trick against Cal Poly and assisting on the game winning goal against San Francisco to secure the WCC title.

Named a co-captain for the season, Dillon was an All-West Region Third Team honoree and returns to anchor a deep back line for the Toreros. Dillon played in 1,330 minutes last season, scoring three goals for six points. The Draper, Utah, native was named the 2022 WCC Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts.

Also a co-captain for a second consecutive season, Johnstone is back for his senior campaign after a year in which he played a key defensive midfield role. Johnstone played in 1,500 minutes last season, creating a formidable middle of the field for the Toreros. A native of Kent, England, Johnstone played and started all 19 games last season and served as a team leader, winning the WCC's 2022 Male Sportsmanship Award.
